Steve Knight

STEPHEN “STEVE” ALAN KNIGHT, 72, passed away September 9, 2023. Visitation will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, September 16, 2023, at the Hawley Church of Christ. A memorial service will be 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the Hawley Church of Christ. Please join the family after the service for lunch at the church.

Born October 22, 1950 in Ballinger, Steve was a son of the late Darrell and Marie (Reneau) Knight. He lived in Brownfield, Lovington, New Mexico and he and his family moved to Abilene in 1963. Steve attended Franklin Junior High School and then Abilene High School. He said he graduated from Abilene High School in 1969 by the skin of his teeth. He still don’t know sick’em from come’ere.

Steve started roofing houses when he was 16 years old and ran Knight Roofing for 56 years. He was a former pig farmer, home builder and a grocery store owner. Steve also served as the executive secretary for the Texas and Southwestern Hamshire Breeders Association. Steve was widely known for his strong work ethic, but also for his willingness to help others.

Steve is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Pat (Williams) Knight; a son, Guy Knight (and wife, Sabrina); a daughter D’Ann McAlister (and husband, Stuart); a son Jim Drennan (and wife, Shelley); and his two brothers, Danny Knight (and wife, Jan) and Larry Knight (and wife, Mary Kay).

He was much loved as Pa Stevie and Poppy to seven grandchildren, Cody, Garrett and Dakota Drennan, Cameron and Evan McAlister and Dylan and Skylar Knight; and four great-grandchildren, Adler, Alice, Abe and Jamie.

The family would like to thank Steve’s faithful crew. These men and their families are family to us. Joe Leyva, Julio Gomez, Enrique Gomez and Rafael Galvan. Steve and Pat had many “adopted” children as well. Special love and thanks go out to the families of Russell and Michelle McGuire, Geoffrey and Suzanne Richter, Lawrence and Lisa Selensky, Rob and Lori Ritchie, and Pat and Nicki Rippee.

Jan Nunnally (Lineweaver)

Steve was our roofer for years. He always took care of us and gave us good advice. A few years ago he attended my cousin's husband's funeral. He heard about a Nunnally family pie recipe that was mentioned during the service. He called me to ask for the recipe. I told him to come by and I'd have it ready. When he came over, I asked him to sit down for a visit. I brought a piece of pie that I'd baked. He ate it and said, "I'll definitely make that pie!" Don't know if he ever did. We'll surely miss him!

Steve was a dear, close friend, even though we spent very little time together during our adult lives. We usually saw each other only every 10 years during class reunions, but I felt a special closeness to him and to my other best friend from high school (George Ann Hughes) who we also lost earlier this summer.

Not knowing “sick’em from come’ere” is something Steve always said about himself, but the truth is that he was one of the smartest people I’ve ever known.  He had unsurpassed wisdom about how we humans should live and get along, and I know that if this world were full of Steves, it would be a much better place.

His way of living was evident in his family and work relationships.  It was an inspiration to hear about how he interacted and cared for his family, and I’ve never known anyone who worked harder than he did, during the day at his business, and then evenings and weekends caring for his crops and livestock.

Once a friend, always a friend for Steve Knight.  That was true for everyone he called a friend. I will miss him.  May he rest in peace.
