It's funny the things you remember about people, especially those you had no contact with after public school. John was a big fellow and strong. I was anything but big and strong, however that didn't stop the two of us from trading thumps on the knuckles during class at Lincoln Jr. High. That's a stupid (class time avoidance) game where one person makes a tight fist and the other thumps or flicks the area between the knuckles as hard as he can with his middle finger. I'm sure there are those of you who remember this silly and painful game. Well, I never could even begin to out-thump John. My knuckles would be swollen and red for hours after a session. He loved to inflict that rather harmless pain on me and I enjoyed the chance to try to reciprocate. I remember John as a gentle, fun loving and happy guy who always had a smile on his face.
I remember years after school John and I went to his house and sat around listening to spanish music.I didn't understand a word but I liked the beat and rythym. He was a nice guy.
Right after high school I would occasionally run into John. It was Carolyn Jackson Hines who told me of his death. I was very sadden to hear of that. He was a funny and didn't meet a stranger - type of guy.

I went to Lincoln and AHS with "Big John" and though I didn't know him really well, I aways remember him having a big smile on his face.I had the pleasure of knowing his daughter Samantha as an employee and co-worker. We had an instant connection because she was so much like him.
