Don Lawson

Don Lawson

Don Thomas Lawson, age 72, of Trabuco Canyon, California passed away on Saturday, September 23, 2023.

Don was always looking for fun. As a child his mother would give him "art lessons" to help pass the time before he was ready to go off to school. He always had an exuberant personality, and a spirit that loved the outdoors. He spent most of his childhood days fishing and playing ball with his friends at Will Hair Creek. When he played high school baseball his friends called him Lucky Lawson as his hits always found a way to fall in a spot where no one could field it. Little did he know his true "luck" would come from a minister George Bailey who taught Don to pray for the right wife for him. His prayers couldn't have been answered better as he eventually met the love of his life Loryn teaching at the same school some 20 years later. He was extremely proud of his Church of Christ ancestry,( he was 5th generation you know!), his Texas roots, his namesake Don H. Morris, (the president of Abilene Christian College, and his Southwest Conference referee dad Shorty. He would always refer to himself as a P.E. teacher from Orange County, a job he was great at for more than 30 years. He was a lover of Mexico and the adventure it brought him, and was also pretty high on Costa Rica. He was born to be a Dad and he loved his sons dearly. He always made it a priority to come straight home from work so he could play with or or coach their teams. He was truly in love with his wife Loryn, and his only true wish was to be with her whenever possible as they got older. He may have to wait a little longer, but will do so while being embraced in the loving arms of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ . We love you Don and dad, and we can't wait to be with your loving soul again. Loryn, Sean (who wrote this) and Scott.

Very sorry to hear of Don's passing.  I knew Don since my earliest days in Abilene, moving there just before starting 3rd grade at Taylor Elementary School.  Don was one of the first handful of kids I met and I was always grateful for the friendship he showed to a nervous and bashful newcomer.  Rest in peace Don.

I've known Don and the "Lawson boys" from my earliest recollection as they lived a few doors down from my paternal grandparents and Don & Barry Curry were the guys my age who I could play with.Don was always jovial and fun to be around. I'm sure he will be sorely missed.

Don and I were "across the street" neighbors on E.N. 20th from kindergarten throught the 8th grade. He was my very best friend, playmate, and fishing buddy during those years. We remained close all the way through college. I got to meet his family several years ago on a vacation trip to southern California. He was still teaching PE and loving life. I loved him dearly and knew that he loved me too.

Don was one of a group of us who "grew up on ACC Hill" and went from kindergarten through college together.  He was a good student, always participating in athletics and other activities.  My memories of him all include his smile, friendliness, and Christianity.  His obituary is a touching tribute to the kind of man he was.  Those who grew up with him would expect nothing less.

Don was one of the "golden boys" in our group of kids at Taylor Elementary. He was a great athlete and seemed easy around everybody. He did indeed grow up with a great heritage from his family. I am heartened to read that he was proud of that and was very loved by his family.

I am sorry to hear of Don's passing. My deepest sympathies go out to his family.

I met Don at Taylor Elementary and knew him through high school. He was a great guy. Always friendly and liked playing sports.

We both played little league baseball at Will Hair Park at the Northern Little League park.

Don was one of the best players.

We also ran track at Taylor Elementary. He was fast. I remember us going to a track meet at the old Fair park statium ( Now Rose Park and that field was torn down years ago.). Don was one of the runners on Taylor Elementary relay teams.

I began as a student at Taylor in the fourth grade. I didn't know anyone in Mrs Perkins class, but Don was one of the first kids to make me feel liked. The fact that I wasn't a member of the Christ of Christ never seemed to make any difference to him or is friends. Thank you.      We all just enjoyed growing up , up on "the Hill". I am forever grateful for growing up with all these kids and Don was one of those kids that I looked up to and tried to follow his example of just being a good guy.

I hope , in the future, we can all be together and play and fish together at spiritual place like Will Hair Park.

And relive some of those Happy days.

Thanks, Don , for being in my life.

I"ve known Don since we were youngsters, growing up on the ACC "hill", in elementary school (Taylor) and we also went to church together at College CoC.  Don was 2 years older, so when I was a sophomore and Don was a Senior, I was lucky enough that Coach Blackie Blackburn let me "suit up" with the varsity baseball team which included Robert Hill, Cliff Thomas, Mike Walsh, William Robinson and of course, Don Lawson.  Don was our second baseman, and a good one at that!  We took many bus trips to Odessa, Midland, Big Spring, and San Angelo to play district games.  Don was usually in the middle of all the laughter and fun we had on those bus rides.  He could take a joke, and give out a few as well.  He was given a lot of grief during his senior year when he started dating a girl who lived in Potosi.  Robert Hill and William Robinson were the ones who gave Don the most "grief"about that!

Don was smart, and always in a good humor.  Although we lost contact with each other after college (we both went to ACC/ACU), I got to see Don when his father (Shorty Lawson) passed away and the funeral was held at the University Church of Christ several years ago.  We enjoyed seeing each other again, but we know we will meet again for eternity!

May God bless Don's family; sending prayers for comfort and peace.

Stan Lambert, AHS Class of 1971
